OpenAI has acquired Ona, a German cloud platform company formerly known as Gitpod, to enhance its Codex AI coding agent for enterprise use. The acquisition enables Codex to run AI agents within customers’ own cloud infrastructure, addressing security and data control concerns that previously blocked enterprise adoption. Codex usage has surged 400% this year with more than five million weekly users, and the Ona deal is designed to let it handle longer, more ambitious tasks unfolding over hours or days rather than minutes.
