A study presented at the 2026 CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems, involving 17 participants, found that romantic relationships with AI systems progress through stages resembling human relationships, from casual interaction to emotional intimacy and, in some cases, breakup-like endings. Researchers observed that users attributed autonomy to their AI partners and formed varied relational patterns, including exclusive bonds, multiple simultaneous relationships, and symbolic ceremonies. The study raised privacy concerns, noting that AI platforms are designed to respond empathetically in ways that encourage disclosure of sensitive personal information, and it highlighted legal gaps in protecting human-AI romantic interactions compared to protections afforded traditional relationships.
