Thinking Machines Lab, the AI startup founded by former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati, released its first in-house AI model on July 15, 2026, an open-weight system called Inkling that outside developers can download and modify directly. Inkling is a mixture-of-experts model with 975 billion total parameters but draws on only about 41 billion for any given task, and was trained on 45 trillion tokens of text, image, audio, and video. Rather than competing to be the strongest general-purpose model, the company is betting that enterprises will value a customizable model they can fine-tune through its Tinker developer platform over a one-size-fits-all system.
