Hackers exploited a flaw in Meta’s AI-powered Instagram support chatbot to gain unauthorized access to a number of high-profile accounts over the weekend of May 31 to June 1, 2026. Attackers asked the chatbot to add a new email address to a target account, relayed a verification code the bot had sent to their own address, and the bot then offered a password-reset option without verifying the requester’s identity through the account’s original email or phone. Affected accounts included a dormant Instagram handle used during the Obama White House and the account of a senior U.S. Space Force official, and Meta said the issue was fixed by June 1, 2026.
