A history professor at Adelphi University accused a first-year student of using AI to write an essay, citing a Turnitin AI-detection score without providing supporting documentation. The student, who has autism and said he received only grammar help from a university tutoring program, submitted results from two other AI detectors that both classified the essay as human-written. A New York State Supreme Court judge ruled the university’s finding was “without valid basis and devoid of reason” and ordered Adelphi to expunge the violation from his record.
