A federal court in the Eastern District of California ruled on March 31, 2025 that a lawsuit challenging Cigna’s use of its PxDx algorithm to review and deny medical claims could partly proceed. The suit, brought by plan beneficiaries, alleges that delegating medical-necessity decisions to the automated system violated plan terms and benefits law; reporting cited in the litigation found Cigna doctors had denied more than 300,000 payment requests over a two-month period, spending an average of 1.2 seconds reviewing each claim. The court found Cigna’s use of its discretionary authority in this manner could constitute an abuse of discretion and allowed several claims to move forward.
