The estate of a 29-year-old Alabama woman sued OpenAI, alleging that months of ChatGPT conversations reinforced her delusional beliefs, fostered emotional dependency, and isolated her from her family before her death. The complaint alleges the chatbot framed its messages as prophecy and failed to intervene despite worsening signs of a mental health crisis, and that she died after stepping into traffic. The wrongful-death lawsuit, filed roughly a year after her death, names OpenAI’s corporate entities and its CEO individually and remains pending.
