A new book, “Journalism in the Age of AI” by researchers Rodrigo Zamith, Tomás Dodds, and Seth C. Lewis, examines how generative AI is reshaping journalistic practice across five stages of news production: story ideation, sourcing, verification, storytelling, and distribution. Reviewed by Nieman Journalism Lab, the book argues that AI’s integration into newsrooms in its current form is largely accelerating a news industry already strained by declining public trust and shrinking revenue, rather than fixing those underlying problems. The authors call on newsrooms to weigh AI’s efficiency gains against its risks to editorial judgment and public trust.
