Spanish National Police arrested a man in Murcia accused of using deepfake face-swapping software, forged identity documents, and custom lighting rigs to defeat a digital certificate provider’s video identity-verification checks in order to obtain electronic signatures for financial fraud. He allegedly made 38 fraudulent attempts impersonating at least 30 people and succeeded on multiple occasions before his face-altering software briefly glitched during a live verification call, exposing his real face for about a second and triggering his arrest. Investigators recovered more than 320 phone lines across two dozen devices and other equipment linked to the scheme.
