The Trump administration filed a statement of interest in federal court supporting OpenAI’s fair-use defense in its copyright case brought by The New York Times. The government argued that training AI models on copyrighted text can qualify as fair use and that restricting access to training data would harm scientific progress and national security. It is the first time the U.S. government has formally intervened in the wave of copyright lawsuits filed against AI companies by publishers, authors, and news organizations.
