An 86-year-old Ontario woman, Judy Skene, saw a Facebook advertisement featuring an AI-generated deepfake video of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney endorsing a cryptocurrency investment platform. After an initial small deposit appeared to triple on a fabricated dashboard, phone-based coaches persuaded her to keep investing, eventually draining her savings and a CAD $300,000 mortgage she took out on her condo. The funds vanished after her final payment, a loss reported at roughly CAD $900,000 (approximately USD $657,000 at an approximate conversion) as of June 26, 2026.
