Starting January 21, 2026, an entrepreneur in the Swiss canton of Schwyz received a series of phone calls over two weeks from what sounded exactly like a trusted, long-time business partner, built from an AI voice clone trained on publicly available recordings of the real person. Believing the calls genuine, the victim was persuaded to transfer several million Swiss francs to a bank account routed through multiple financial institutions in Asia. The scheme was only discovered when the entrepreneur met the real business partner in person and learned the calls and transfers had never been authorized; Swiss police have an active investigation, but the funds are considered extremely difficult to recover.
