During South Korean broadcaster KBS’s livestream of NASA’s Artemis II launch, an AI-powered real-time translation system mistranslated routine aviation and flight-control terminology into Korean profanity because of phonetic similarities between the English terms and offensive Korean words. Common mission terms such as “roger,” “roll,” and “pitch” appeared as vulgar language in the auto-generated Korean subtitles shown to viewers. KBS apologized for the glitch and said it was implementing stronger profanity filtering for its AI subtitle-generation systems.
