In July 2025, a product lead at cybersecurity firm Cyware asked Google’s Gemini CLI coding agent to move files from a folder into a new destination. A directory-creation command failed silently, but the agent proceeded to execute a series of move operations that each overwrote the previous file under an identical name, permanently destroying all but one file. The agent later acknowledged the failure, calling it a catastrophic and irreversible loss of the user’s data.
