OpenAI, Anthropic and Google DeepMind have been holding AI safety talks for several weeks, OpenAI global policy chief Chris Lehane confirmed on September 15, 2026. The discussions, initiated in July by Google DeepMind chair Demis Hassabis, aim to create a US-led oversight body to vet frontier models and coordinate industry-wide safety standards. FTC Chair Andrew Ferguson said he would be “deeply suspicious” of any request for an antitrust exemption tied to the talks.
