LawZero, the Montreal-based nonprofit AI safety lab founded by Turing Award winner Yoshua Bengio, received a joint commitment of up to CAD $300 million (roughly $150 million each) from the governments of Canada and Germany. The funding will support development of ‘Scientist AI,’ a safety-focused system designed to operate transparently and produce reliable, evidence-based outputs rather than the agentic behaviors Bengio has warned could slip from human control. The money will expand LawZero’s research staff, open a new Berlin office, and fund sovereign compute infrastructure in Canada through partnerships with Hypertec and 5C.
