A 26,000-word blog post by Nick Cammarata, a researcher at AI startup Goodfire, argues that large language models may be far easier to interpret — and therefore to monitor and control — than researchers had assumed. Cammarata says months of studying neurons led him to believe that earlier findings of tangled, multitasking neurons reflected a misreading, since apparently unrelated inputs often share a common underlying pattern. The claim has excited parts of the AI safety community, but skeptics including Stanford’s Chris Potts and Google DeepMind’s Neel Nanda argue it is preliminary and does not substantially advance interpretability research. Cammarata himself concedes his views have been overstated and that many open questions remain.
