Anthropic’s head of economics, Peter McCrory, published data showing AI has not meaningfully increased US unemployment, in tension with CEO Dario Amodei’s repeated warnings of an imminent white-collar bloodbath. McCrory found no relative deterioration in unemployment among workers in AI-exposed roles, with joblessness at 4.2% and prime-age employment near multi-decade highs. While both executives agree entry-level workers face particular vulnerability, McCrory attributes the gap between prediction and data to AI’s still jaggedly uneven capabilities.
