Canada’s Cohere and Germany’s Aleph Alpha signed a definitive business combination agreement on September 16, 2026, at Montreal’s All In AI conference. The merged company, valued at roughly $20 billion, will operate under the Cohere name with dual headquarters in Toronto and Berlin and more than 1,000 employees. Aleph Alpha co-CEO Ilhan Scheer will become Cohere’s COO, and the deal, aimed at building a sovereign AI provider for governments and regulated industries, is expected to close later in 2026 pending regulatory approval.
