Published July 28, 2026, this article describes how researchers made ECMWF’s open-source AIFS weather forecasting model accessible on any GPU or CPU rather than only Ampere-class Nvidia hardware, by building a compatibility patch. The authors provide three ways to run it: via Hugging Face Jobs on cloud infrastructure, locally with the compatibility wrapper, or through an interactive web demo. AIFS uses graph neural networks to produce 15-day global weather forecasts while consuming roughly 1,000 times less energy than traditional physics-based forecasting models.
