Google announced major leadership changes in its AI division, with Chief Scientist Jeff Dean departing after 27 years to launch a new startup, Discovery Loop, focused on AI for science and engineering, alongside fellow Google researcher Sanjay Ghemawat. Demis Hassabis, former CEO of Google DeepMind, moved into a chairman and Chief Scientist role at parent company Alphabet, while Koray Kavukcuoglu was promoted to lead Google DeepMind. The announcement, made by CEO Sundar Pichai, caused Alphabet’s stock to decline more than 4%.
