A national survey of 1,690 US adults by research firm Verasight found that 69% support requiring AI companies to transfer half their stock to a public sovereign wealth fund. The survey, published in July 2026, comes amid rising tech-sector layoffs — over 166,000 in 2026 so far — that firms have linked to AI investment, and follows legislation introduced by Sen. Bernie Sanders proposing an American AI Sovereign Wealth Fund. Goldman Sachs economist Joseph Briggs has estimated more than 9% of the labor force, or roughly 15 million workers, could lose jobs during a decade-long AI transition.
