Meta’s open-source Segment Anything Model 3 (SAM 3) and DINOv3 are powering SYNAPS-I, a Department of Energy Genesis Mission initiative that automates scientific image analysis at national laboratories. The two models work together, with DINOv3 identifying structures within images and SAM 3 precisely delineating their boundaries, fine-tuned on scientific data and deployed across 300 A100 GPUs at supercomputing facilities. The pipeline reduces analysis time from weeks to about 15 minutes, enabling real-time interpretation during active experiments, and has been demonstrated on grapevine drought-resilience studies to automatically identify water-transport vessels in plant tissue scans.
