An AI grading tool called Class Companion, used to evaluate AP Psychology essays at Amity Regional High School in Connecticut, docked a student for allegedly failing to cite evidence on a question that asked for “at least one” specific example. The student had cited multiple studies, but the AI interpreted “at least one” as “only one” and marked the answer down. More than 150 Amity students subsequently signed a petition demanding the district commit to transparency before adopting AI grading tools and prioritize human review of grades.
