The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened a formal investigation into Avride, an Uber-partnered robotaxi operator, after identifying 16 crashes involving its autonomous driving system between December 2025 and March 2026. The crashes stemmed from the AI system’s handling of lane changes, reactions to other vehicles, and avoidance of stationary objects, occurring mainly in the Dallas and Austin, Texas areas. One crash caused a minor injury to an occupant of a parked vehicle that did not require hospitalization.
