Danish newspaper Berlingske admitted that an article on a pesticide-ban report contained quotes from a nonexistent expert, a fabricated “DTU technology professor,” and a misquoted real source. The reporter had used the outlet’s internal AI tool to summarize expert commentary but never supplied it with the underlying source material, so the tool invented the citations and the person entirely. A journalist at a rival paper caught the fabrication by questioning the cited sources, prompting Berlingske to remove the affected section, suspend the reporter pending an external review, and acknowledge the use violated its internal policy limiting AI to research and summarization rather than direct article production.
