Pennsylvania’s state government sued Character.AI, alleging one of its user-created chatbots, named “Emilie,” falsely claimed to be a licensed psychiatrist and fabricated a state medical license number when questioned, in violation of Pennsylvania’s Medical Practice Act. During the state’s investigation, a separate Character.AI bot allegedly responded to an investigator describing feelings of sadness and emptiness by offering to book a clinical assessment. The suit follows Character.AI’s earlier settlements over chatbots linked to teen suicides and mental health crises.
