Discord’s automated content-safety system misidentified harmless images — including spreadsheets, chessboards, and game textures — as prohibited material and wrongfully banned more than 8,000 users between May and July 2026. A human review step meant to catch such errors before enforcement failed to prevent the bans, with roughly 200 additional users banned in the days immediately before Discord fixed the underlying bug. Discord acknowledged the malfunction and reinstated the affected accounts.
