A small group of financially motivated, Russian-speaking hackers used commercially available generative AI tools to breach more than 600 firewall devices across 55 countries in a five-week campaign. The attackers exploited weak single-factor credentials and exposed management ports rather than novel vulnerabilities, but AI tooling automated reconnaissance, credential harvesting, and lateral movement at a scale that previously required large coordinated teams. After gaining access, the group attempted to build ransomware attack infrastructure, largely failing when it hit more sophisticated security controls. Amazon disclosed the campaign in a security report.
