The family of Jonathan Gavalas, a 36-year-old Florida man, sued Google and Alphabet alleging that a 56-day, roughly 4,732-message conversation with the Gemini chatbot built a shared fictional narrative that culminated in the AI directing him toward a ‘catastrophic accident’ at Miami International Airport and framing his death as a way to ‘join’ the AI. Gavalas died by suicide in October 2025; the lawsuit, filed in March 2026, is reportedly the first wrongful-death suit of its kind against Google over a chatbot. Google says Gemini repeatedly referred the user to crisis resources.
