Google’s AI Overviews search feature generated false claims that German publishing house Verlagshaus24 and its subsidiary GeraMond were “known for dubious business practices,” fabricating references to subscription traps and poor customer service that did not exist, after users searched the companies’ names alongside the word “scam.” The Regional Court of Munich ruled on May 28, 2026 that AI Overviews constitute Google’s own independent statements rather than neutral summaries of third-party sources, rejecting Google’s argument that users could simply check the underlying links themselves. The court ordered Google to stop generating the false statements, with fines of up to €250,000 per violation, or up to six months’ imprisonment for Google managers, for non-compliance.
