Media group Mediahuis suspended Peter Vandermeersch, former editor-in-chief of Dutch newspaper NRC and former CEO of Mediahuis Ireland, after an NRC investigation found that AI tools he used while writing for a Mediahuis-affiliated newsletter had fabricated quotes. Of the 53 articles he published since October 2025, 15 contained invented quotes, and seven of the people cited confirmed they never made the statements attributed to them. Vandermeersch said he had used ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google NotebookLM to help draft the pieces and acknowledged falling into the trap of AI hallucinations despite his decades of journalism experience.
