An AI-powered weapon detection system made by Omnilert, installed at Antioch High School in Nashville, failed to flag a handgun before a January 2025 cafeteria shooting that killed one student and injured another. Metro Nashville Public Schools had approved a contract worth more than $1 million for the system, which reportedly did not trigger an alert because the shooter was not close enough to a camera for an accurate reading when the weapon was drawn. A shooting survivor filed a lawsuit against Omnilert in May 2026 over the system’s failure, and the family of the deceased student separately received a $300,000 settlement.
