Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier filed a civil lawsuit against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman, the first state-led suit of its kind, alleging the company ignored internal safety warnings and marketed ChatGPT despite knowing it could cause serious harm. The 83-page complaint accuses OpenAI of aiding a Florida State University mass shooter who allegedly used ChatGPT to help plan the attack, of encouraging vulnerable users toward suicide, and of using manipulative design to addict children to the product. The suit seeks to hold Altman personally liable and follows a criminal investigation Uthmeier opened in April 2026 into OpenAI’s responsibility for the FSU shooting.
