Seattle Fire Department has used an AI system from Corti since December 2023 to analyze 911 medical calls and route some callers to a nurse hotline instead of dispatching an ambulance, without public disclosure, a privacy-ordinance review, or city council approval; reporting found the tool increased nurse-line diversions by roughly a third. The practice is tied to a wrongful-death lawsuit from the estate of a 71-year-old woman who died after waiting more than ten hours for an ambulance following a nurse-line transfer. The city’s ambulance contractor settled the suit on confidential terms.
