A Michigan couple, Brian and Wendy VanDoeselaar, lost $66,000 in the final days of closing on a $460,000 condo in Hudsonville near Grand Rapids. Scammers used suspected AI voice-cloning technology alongside convincing fake emails impersonating parties in the transaction to redirect the couple’s closing funds. The closing was canceled hours before the paperwork was due to be signed, and by the time the fraud was discovered the money could not be recovered.
