Waymo issued a voluntary NHTSA recall covering its entire fleet of 3,871 fifth-generation robotaxis after its automated driving system failed to recognize freeway construction-zone closures in 13 separate incidents during April and May 2026 — six in Phoenix and seven in the San Francisco Bay Area. In at least one case a vehicle drove through traffic cones and past police at highway speed before the fault was caught. Waymo pulled all its vehicles from freeway operation while it develops a software fix, marking the company’s sixth safety recall in recent months.
