In October 2025, an Oregon veterinary hospital used Zoetis’s Vetscan Imagyst AI cytology tool to analyze a rapidly growing neck mass on an 11-year-old dog. The tool classified the mass as an inflammatory lesion rather than cancer, leading the surgical team to remove it with margins appropriate only for benign tissue. A follow-up biopsy at a separate lab found the mass was aggressive cancer that had not been fully removed, and the dog later died from complications of a second surgery. Columbia Veterinary Hospital has sued Zoetis, alleging the company acknowledged the error after the fact and admitted similar misclassifications had occurred with other Imagyst users.
