On June 20, 2026, an unoccupied Zoox robotaxi in the Las Vegas area encountered heavy smoke from an active fire emergency that had not yet been cordoned off with traffic cones. The vehicle’s software failed to detect and respond appropriately to the reduced-visibility conditions, braking hard and attempting to steer away before coming to a stop inside the scene; a remote teleoperator reversed it out so first responders could secure the area. Amazon-owned Zoox filed a voluntary recall with NHTSA on July 7, 2026 covering the automated driving software built between April 23 and July 8, and pushed an update addressing smoke detection to its 105-vehicle fleet. No injuries were reported and the company said it was the only incident of its kind.
