UCLA Health received a five-year, $25 million grant from the National Institute on Aging to lead APEX-ADRD, a national program to test and evaluate AI tools for diagnosing and treating Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. The initiative is run in collaboration with Mayo Clinic and the University of Wisconsin and aims to validate AI technologies while ensuring benefits reach diverse patient populations. Program lead Dr. John N. Mafi said the effort will bring rigor to every stage of an AI tool’s lifecycle and share evaluation frameworks nationally to help clinicians identify cognitive decline earlier.
