California Governor Gavin Newsom and Anthropic announced a partnership giving state and local government agencies access to Claude at a discounted rate, along with staff training and technical support. The deal lets state employees use the chatbot to draft documents and analyze information while maintaining human oversight. The agreement contrasts with the federal government’s approach, after the Pentagon previously labeled Anthropic a supply-chain risk and chose OpenAI instead following disputes over safeguards against surveillance and autonomous weapons use.
