Round Hill Music, which manages a $1.1 billion portfolio of music rights, filed separate copyright infringement lawsuits against Suno and Anthropic on August 17 in the US District Court for the Northern District of California. The suits allege the companies used data-scraping methods to copy more than 500 Round Hill-controlled songs — including “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and “I Got You (I Feel Good)” — without authorization to train their AI models, violating both the Copyright Act and the DMCA. Round Hill is seeking statutory damages of up to $150,000 per work, which it says could total nearly $1 billion in each case, and says it plans to amend the complaints to cover potentially ten thousand or more works.
