The Seattle Times and Newsday filed a federal lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft alleging the companies scraped their websites, including paywalled content, to train and operate AI products such as ChatGPT and Copilot without permission. The newspapers say the resulting AI outputs can reproduce or closely paraphrase their reporting, reducing reader visits and subscription revenue. Both companies responded citing fair use and openness to dialogue. The suit follows a similar 2023 case brought by the New York Times against the same defendants.
