Researchers at the University of Cambridge and biotech firm DIOSynVax announced that an AI-designed vaccine candidate successfully completed a Phase I human trial involving 39 volunteers, with no significant side effects. The vaccine uses AI to identify conserved features across the Sarbeco group of coronaviruses and combine them into a single “super-antigen” intended to resist mutation-based escape. Phase II and Phase III trials are still needed to establish efficacy, but researchers believe the AI-driven design methodology could be applied to other viral threats.
