Google DeepMind has lost six named researchers to rival labs Meta, OpenAI, and Anthropic since February, amid a broader talent migration in AI research. Notable departures include John Jumper, a DeepMind vice president who shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, who moved to Anthropic, and Noam Shazeer, a co-author of the landmark 2017 “Attention Is All You Need” paper, who moved to OpenAI. The departures come as DeepMind pivots more of its research focus toward coding-specific AI models.
