The UN Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence released a preliminary report warning that governance frameworks are not keeping pace with rapidly advancing AI capabilities. While the panel acknowledges AI’s transformative potential for healthcare, education, and scientific research, it cautions that without proper safeguards the technology could deepen inequality, spread misinformation, and concentrate power among a small number of nations and companies. The panel states that “the window to establish effective global governance remains open but may not stay that way for long,” noting that developing countries face particular disadvantages in accessing and controlling AI systems.
