Asteroid-mining company AstroForge has built an autonomous AI control system called Solo, a transformer-based model designed to let spacecraft navigate and make decisions without real-time communication from Earth. The system will fly in shadow mode aboard the DeepSpace-2 spacecraft in late 2026 before taking full autonomous control of the Autonomy-1 mission in 2027, which the company says will be the first space mission to complete its entire objective without a single command from the ground. CEO Matthew Gialich described the approach as a “constrained autonomy” built for anomaly resolution during deep-space operations rather than general-purpose intelligence.
