Illinois Governor JB Pritzker signed the Artificial Intelligence Safety Measures Act (SB 315) into law on July 6, 2026, establishing what officials describe as the nation’s strongest AI safety and transparency framework. The law requires developers of the largest AI systems, those generating more than $500 million in annual revenue, to publicly disclose safety practices, report significant safety incidents within 72 hours, and undergo mandatory annual third-party audits. It also creates confidential reporting channels and whistleblower protections for employees who raise AI safety concerns. Illinois joins California and New York in enacting aligned AI regulations, with violations subject to civil penalties of $1 million for a first offense and $3 million for subsequent violations; the law takes effect January 1, 2028.
