West Fargo, North Dakota police used facial recognition software to identify Angela Lipps, a 50-year-old Tennessee grandmother, as a suspect in a bank fraud case based on an image from a fake ID, matching her via her social media presence. She was arrested in July 2025 and held in custody for more than five months, despite bank records showing she was making routine purchases in Tennessee throughout the period the fraud occurred, before charges were dismissed around Christmas Eve 2025. Her attorneys say facial recognition was used as essentially the sole investigative tool and are gathering records from multiple agencies to consider legal action.
