Thames Valley Police used automated facial recognition software to match Alvi Choudhury, a Southampton-based software engineer, to CCTV footage of a suspect in a £3,000 burglary in Milton Keynes, roughly 100 miles from his home. Officers handcuffed him at his home and held him in custody for close to 10 hours despite CCTV footage showing a visibly younger, clean-shaven man and Choudhury offering evidence of work meetings in Southampton at the time of the crime. He was released without charge and has filed a complaint alleging the misidentification may have involved racial bias.
